How often should I get an oil change?

Traditionally, mechanics have advised oil changes every 3,000 miles or every three to six months; which ever comes first. However, this may not be necessary any more because of advances in oil and engine technology that have led to prolonged oil life. Many GM cars come with an oil life monitor that lights up when it’s time to change your oil. Your vehicle monitors a number of things to determine when it’s time for an oil change including engine temperature, number of cold starts, climate conditions, vehicle speed, and other factors.

For the best information regarding how often you should change your oil, please refer to your vehicle maintenance booklet. The type of oil you use could also affect recommended oil change frequency, so please bear that in mind as well. In general, however, it is a good rule of thumb to change your oil no less than once a year.

Jim Falk Motors offers a $14.95 oil change on all makes and models!* Click here make an appointment today. Or call 888-672-0529!

Do I really need to get a new oil filter every time I get an oil change?

If you do not change your oil filter, old oil will be filtered back into your vehicle’s system. Oil filters are inexpensive ($4-$6) and leaving them unchanged is not worth the risk of damage to your car.

How often should I change my air filter on my car?

This depends on the kind of driving conditions that you normally face. In general, city drivers who drive mostly on paved roads should change their air filter about every 15,000 miles or once a year. Country drivers who encounter a lot of dusty terrain, such as gravel roads, should change their filters more often – up to once a month in the dustiest of conditions.

How often should my vehicle’s fluid levels be checked and refilled?

While fluid levels are not something that should normally demand much of your attention (except gasoline of course!), it is always better to check and maintain proper fluid levels instead of correcting a problem that has occurred because of insufficient auto fluids.

Windshield wiper fluid will need to be tended to as it is used. Other fluids including brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid and battery fluid can be monitored on about a three year or 30,000 mile basis.

For the best information that is most relevant to you and your type of vehicle, please refer to your driver’s manual and/or your mechanic.

Jim Falk Motors offers a FREE pit stop service - we'll check all of your fluids and your tire pressure for FREE!!! Just bring your car, truck, or SUV by or call us at 888-672-0529 to make an appointment!

What does it mean when your brake light comes on?

The first thing to look at when your brake light is on is your parking/emergency brake. Many vehicles activate the brake light as a reminder to the driver that the parking brake is engaged.

Another easily fixable situation that may cause your brake light to come on is a misadjusted switch on the parking brake pedal or lever. A quick readjustment should fix the problem and cause the light to go off.

If your brake light comes on when you press your brake pedal, or if it is on continuously, it may mean that you have a problem with hydraulic pressure or brake fluid levels. In either case, this could be a serious problem because it may cause your brakes to stop working or to work improperly. You should avoid driving your vehicle until a trained technician can diagnose the problem.

What do brake pads do?

Brake pads provide the frictional force necessary to stop your vehicle. If your vehicle has disc brakes, a pad is placed between the calipers and the rotors to provide friction, absorb heat, and get the car to stop when the driver engages the brake.

If I only need one tire replaced, should I replace one tire? Two? All?

This really depends on the shape your tires are in. If you must replace one of your tires and all three have significant wear and tear, you may as well replace all four at the same time. However, if all of your tires are relatively new or not very worn, you should be able to replace just the one tire, or one tire and the one across from it. It is most important that the tires across from each other are similarly worn so that your car can maintain even “footing” while in motion. A mechanic will be able to give you the best recommendation for your vehicle and the condition of your tires.

Jim Falk Motors offers a 30 day price match guarantee on all tires! If you find a deal on tires that you've seen within the last 30 days, bring it in and we will match it or we will refund you the difference! Call 888-672-0529 or click here to make an appointment!

What is the main cause of tire damage?

Many things can cause tire damage, however, the most common cause is improper inflation. The good news is that you can easily prevent this problem by monitoring your tire pressure monthly.

Call us at 888-672-0529, click here, or stop by Jim Falk Motors to make an appointment with our certified technicians today!

What should my tire pressure be?

Tire pressure should be monitored regularly, at least once a month. Most cars, small SUVs, and small trucks drive best with a tire pressure of 27 to 32 psi. Large trucks, SUVs and other large vehicles should be at 5 to 8 psi. Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for a more precise recommendation.

Jim Falk Motors offers FREE pit stops! We'll check your tire pressure and your fluid levels for FREE! Stop on by, or give us a call at 888-672-0529 to make an appointment!

What happens if my tires have too much pressure? What if they don’t have enough?

Over inflated tires will decrease the amount of the tire that is actually touching the road. This will cause a decrease in traction and an increase in stopping distance. This can be dangerous, especially when driving at high speeds such as on the highway.

Under inflation can result in quicker wear on your tires. Additionally, your tires could over heat leading to tread separation. Excessive tread separation could result in an accident.

It is important to keep your tires properly inflated for many other reasons including maximizing your fuel economy, lengthening the life of your tires, and to aid in optimal vehicle handling.

Why is my car pulling to one side?

Your alignment may be off, or the pressure between one or more of your tires may be different. If you’ve checked your tire pressure and you are still feeling a pull, you should have your alignment checked by a professional. Alignment problems could result in further issues with your suspension, steering, tires, and/or your brake system.

With the purchase of all four tires at Jim Falk Motors, we will provide a FREE alignment service! Just let your service tech know that you saw this ad! Call 888-672-0529 or click here to make an appointment!

What does alignment service do?

Most GM service departments utilize a computerized machine to both assess your current alignment and determine the specifications set forth by your vehicle’s manufacturer. After the current state of alignment is determined, adjustments are made to your suspension components in order to obtain ideal placement for your tires. The mechanic will also check the parts in the suspension system of your car to see if they are worn out and should, consequently, be replaced.

Jim Falk Motors offers a 3 year alignment agreement that can save you big bucks! Call our service department for details at 888-672-0529!

What does it feel like when your transmission is slipping?

A transmission slip occurs when the engine revs during a gear change, your vehicle is taking too much time to coast, or there is a delay in acceleration. Another sign of transmission problems is if your RMP gauge goes up to or above 3,500.

If you need a transmission flush, come to Jim Falk Motors and get $10 off the normal price! Click here for the coupon!

What should I do if my transmission is slipping?

One simple cause for a malfunctioning transmission is that your vehicle may be low on automatic transmission fluid. If you have checked your fluid and it is low, then fill it with enough fluid. If your vehicle has enough fluid, you will need to bring your car into a certified service technician for a proper diagnosis.

How often should I change my car battery?

Most battery manufacturers claim that their batteries will last five years, however we frequently see car batteries with lives more in the two-four year range. An old battery can cause problems elsewhere in your car, which can leave you with big bills later. The best policy is to change your battery every 2.5 years, before you have any trouble with it.

Is it normal for liquid to drop from the bottom of my car while I’m using the air conditioning?

Puddles of water may form under your vehicle when it is very hot outside and you have been using your air conditioning system. Many vehicle models have a rubber hose underneath their body that is meant to drain water that has accumulated as moisture is removed from the passenger area. However, if you are not sure that the puddles are water, you may want to get your vehicle checked. It is possible that this liquid could be engine oil, fuel, windshield washer fluid, anti-freeze, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, or one of the other essential fluids that keep your car, truck, or SUV running smoothly.

How often should I get a tune up?

Taking preventative measures can save you lots of money and keep you safe on the road. It is much better to catch a problem before it occurs rather than after something has happened as a result of an undiagnosed issue. A tune up is a great opportunity to have a trained technician assess the health of your vehicle. Tune-ups should be scheduled once a year.

Jim Falk Motors has the best techinicians in town, we know your vehicle and we will go the extra mile to make sure that your car is getting the best service out there! Call us at 888-672-0529 or click here to schedule a service!

What are the services included in a tune-up?

During a routine tune-up mechanics will conduct a thorough inspection of your engine and its components. Parts that are most commonly recommended for replacement are spark plugs, ignition wires, fuel filters, PCV valves, and air filters. Many shops use engine diagnostic equipment and vehicle computer data to determine problems that would otherwise have gone unseen.

Is it necessary to have small cracks on my windshield replaced?

Changes in temperature or pressure can cause small cracks to expand into large ones that make it necessary to have the whole windshield replaced. Depending on the size, placement, and severity of the damage, you may be able to have it repaired, which can be much cheaper than replacement. Usually, cracks that are up to about three inches in length, or chips up to the size of a quarter, can be repaired without replacing the windshield. A technician can tell you for sure, but it is smart to bring your vehicle to a professional soon after the damage to your windshield has occurred so that it does not cause a bigger problem.

What are some driving habits that can increase fuel economy?

Our driving habits can affect the rate at which fuel is consumed by our vehicles. Below are a few tips to help you get the most out of your gas money.

·     Drive the speed limit. Most vehicles reach optimal fuel usage at 50 mph and, though you should not try to drive at this speed when it is not appropriate, it is a good benchmark to keep in mind. As your speed reaches levels further away from 50 mph, your fuel economy will decrease.

·     Use your cruise control. Cruise control is a mechanism that regulates the speed of your car at a steady pace, which, in most cases, results in a more efficient rate of fuel consumption.

·     Take unnecessary items out of your car. Additional weight will make your engine work harder, using more fuel.

·     Drive like a lady or gentleman. Aggressive driving often involves quick acceleration, frequent stops and starts, and other fuel draining maneuvers. Driving calmly can save you dollars in gas.
